SYNOPSIS OR PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Sonata is a musically driven, coming-of-age short film following Korean-American sisters and musicians, Viv and Gia. The sisters must grapple with their diverging ambitions amidst the strain of caring for their ailing mother.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS:

[VIV SONG] Young Woman, 19 to 23 years old, South Korean or Korean-Passing. Composed, tender-hearted, and reliable like a piano, Viv is the "unni" (older sister) of the family. As her mother’s health declines, she delays her aspirations of being a classical pianist to uphold her familial responsibilities. While taking community college classes, Viv must decide if she’s going to apply to conservatory and pursue the path she’s always dreamt about.

[GIA SONG] Young Woman, 17 to 22 years old, South Korean or Korean-Passing. Driven, headstrong, and confident, Gia is the "dongsaeng" (youngest sibling) of the family in her senior year of high school. While Viv is busy taking care of May, Gia struggles with knowing how to help. Her violin is her source of comfort as she dreams of getting into a top conservatory and pursuing music like her mother.

[MAY SONG] Middle Age Woman, 40 to 55 years old. South Korean or Korean Passing. A former music teacher and single mom who loves her daughters more than anything. After developing dementia, her life goal has become to make her daughters successful musicians. Most of all, she wants them to have a happy relationship.

[YOUNG VIV SONG] 11 to 13 years old, South Korean or Korean-Passing. Composed, tender-hearted, and reliable like a piano, Viv is the "unni" (older sister) of the family. At 11 years old, she is shy but comes off as mature for her age. While she may look timid as she plays, her piano emanates sweet and gentle melodies. She aims to make her mother proud, but struggles to get along with her little sister Gia as they work to perfect a duet for the stage.

[YOUNG GIA SONG] 8 to 10 years old, South Korean or Korean-Passing. Driven, headstrong, and confident, Gia is the dongsaeng (younger sister) of the family. At 9 years old, she is eager, stubborn, and unafraid to speak her mind. She plays her violin with vigor and often clashes with her older sister Viv as their mother teaches them how to play a duet.
