East West Players continued its 50th Anniversary Season Golden with our signature “One Night Only” fundraiser on Saturday, August 15, 2015, in Little Tokyo. The sold out event was a tribute to Producing Artistic Director Tim Dang and Arts Education Director Marilyn Tokuda, honoring their twenty-plus years of commitment to East West Players. It was announced earlier this year that Tim Dang would be stepping down as Artistic Director at EWP in June 2016 and Marilyn Tokuda would be retiring at the same time.
Although temperatures reached a high of 93 degrees, Little Tokyo remained vibrant amidst the Nisei Week festivities and its energy carried over into the Union Center for the Arts where long time and new EWP patrons kicked off the evening’s celebrations with specialty cocktails aptly named Tokuda Coolers and Tim Dang Bangers. Our host Amy Hill provided laughs and encouraged everyone to participate in the opportunity drawings.
Guests enjoyed dinner al fresco by chef David Sutton and Simpang Asia in the Aratani Courtyard.
The evening continued in the David Henry Hwang Theater with music by Joan Almedilla, Kerry K. Carnahan, Carissa Dizon, Antoine Reynaldo, Ai Goeku, Randy Guiya, Jonny Hsu Lee, Deedee Magno Hall, Joyee Lin, Jennifer Paz and Lito Villareal. Tim and Marilyn invited the audience to join them on stage for the finale song “What I Did For Love” from Chorus Line. The show, directed by Marilyn Tokuda and musical direction by Nathan Wang, concluded with balloon drop and a standing ovation.
After the show, the festivities continued back in the courtyard with a specialty of desserts provided by chef David Sutton. Eager ticketholders also waited anxiously for their numbers to be called out in hopes they’d be lucky enough to win one of the amazing opportunity drawing prizes.
Produced by Associate Artistic Director Snehal Desai and co-chaired by John Gong and Lynn Waggoner for the Board of Directors, the momentous occasion was successful in surpassing our fundraising goal! Special thanks to our sponsors and donors and thank you for celebrating Tim and Marilyn!
