A LETTER FROM SANDRA TSING LOH

“Recently, sorting through my attic, I found my solo play Aliens in America recorded on cassette tape. My first thought was that a visit from Marie Kondo was long overdue. My second: “Has it really been 20 years?” It explored what it meant to be both an immigrant and artist, not in New York, but under the swaying palm trees of Southern California. It’s with great warmth and joy that I consider how the East West Players has grown and evolved here as well, creating a safe haven for Asian American artists to showcase their talent, experiment, thrive.

Reflecting back, I wonder: In 20 years has anything really changed? I’m now a mother of two mixed-race teens (taller than me). Do they feel as though they, too, are strangers in a foreign land? It has taken us 20 years to see Asian Americans in leading roles on film and television, but here at EWP, it’s where we’ve always been. It’s a place I hope will always be here. This is why I’m so proud to be a part of EWP’s 54th Season, We Are The Ones That We Are Waiting For, with my holiday show, Sugar Plum Fairy. I don’t want EWP to just be in our pasts, but part of all of our children’s futures. It is EWP who will continue to hold space for our stories. But we are the ones who have to act now to secure that future.”

As East West Players celebrates its 54th Anniversary we are asking you to help ensure a bright future for Asian American artists by supporting us with a year-end gift!

WE CAN ONLY DO THIS WORK WITH YOUR SUPPORT. YOUR GIFT GOES DIRECTLY TO:

  • Our mainstage productions, in which we are the largest theater employer of Asian artists in the country.

  • Our educational programs that reach thousands of students each year in the theatre and in the classroom.

  • Our professional development programs training the next wave of actors and writers in the Asian American artistic community.

  • Our artistic programs that develop new voices and perspectives in theatre and media.

Last year, EWP brought world-class theatre and arts education programs to over 30,000 people, and provided opportunities to over 300 performers, directors, designers, writers and crew, and this is only the beginning.

We are counting on you to ensure that the impact of our work continues to be felt for decades to come!

Make an online gift donation to East West Players and help us reach our goal by December 31, 2019!
