East West Players’ unforgettable evening

by Nora DeVeau-Rosen (General Manager, East West Players)

On Saturday, December 10, East West Players (EWP) had the privilege of participating in Kore Asian Media’s 2016 Unforgettable gala. What an honor and project to undertake!

As the new General Manager at East West Players, this was one of my first projects to take on. I worked with our former Arts Education Director Marilyn Tokuda and Kore Asian Media to produce a portion of the evening’s entertainment program that featured highlights from previous EWP shows. Kore Asian Media also honored George Takei—a past performer on the EWP stage and a long-time EWP supporter, who continues to serve on our Council of Governors—with its first-ever ICON Award and EWP Artistic Director Snehal Desai served on the nominating committee. So we really had a huge presence at the event.

Not only was it a fun process because we got to revisit EWP musical classics with amazing artists like Deedee Magno Hall, Parvesh Cheena, Gedde Watanabe, Alvin Ing, Araceli Prasarttongosoth, Jonny Lee Jr., Marc Macalintal and band, but also the gala was a celebration of community. Theater companies, dance companies, pop artists and internationally-recognized businesses gathered together to embrace George and his contribution to the arts and the LGBT community, and to also shine a light on his groundbreaking work around diversity in the entertainment industry. It was a strong reminder to artists and audience members alike to continue to support each other’s voices and to remain vigilant when so much of our artistic community’s future is unknown.

Other highlights from the evening include honoring Jennifer Yuh Nelson for Director of the Year, and Ken Jeong for Actor of the Year. And not to mention the amazing selfie that Kristina Wong and Leak Nanako Winkler were able to snap with Terrence Howard!

All in all, a pretty inspiring and incredible day. We hope to work with Kore Asian Media again next year! Thanks, Kore Asian Media!
