It was truly an extraordinary night for East West Players and our community. At the Ovation Awards, we won the award for Best Production of a Musical (Large Theater), Best Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Lead Actress in a Musical, Direction in a Musical, all for Next to Normal. Hana Kim, our Set/Projection Designer for Next to Normal, was also honored this year with the Sherwood Award which includes a $10,000 prize with the award. A truly remarkable evening for EWP and these gifted artists.
The ceremony was held at the historic Theatre at the Ace Hotel in Downtown L.A. The whole evening was a beautiful celebration of L.A. theater and the community that keeps it alive and thriving. EWP was represented in a variety of ways, including our Artistic Director Emeritus Tim Dang directing the ceremony, Melody Butiu (A Little Night Music) performing, our board member Reggie Lee presenting, and EWP designers winning top design awards, including E.B. Brooks (Costume Designer for EWP’s A Nice Indian Boy) for her costume design of The Legend of Georgia McBride.
We are beyond grateful for winning four major awards. Congrats to Deedee Magno Hall, Isa Camille Briones, Nancy Keystone, and the entire cast and company of Next to Normal on a riveting, heartbreaking, and now award-winning production! Thank you to LA Stage Alliance and the Ovation voters for your support. And a big thank you to all of you for making this production an amazing success. We must continue to keep shedding light on the stigma of mental illness in our communities, and it was an honor for this beautiful production – which we hope created a space for that conversation – to be honored in this way.
